Debut Album from Lee Jeong-Hyun "Let's Go to My Star"
Last year, Jung-Hyun Lee waved her fan and entered the pop music scene with a unique concept of combining Techno and Oriental culture. Her wide-open eyes on he album cover displayed at large records stores nationwide lures her audience to join her musical world. And when she sang "Wah" and "Change It" on television, she carried a subtle message, which was incomprehensible at first glance. The title of this album is Let's Go To My Star.
She first introduces herself as a visitor from outer space, and in her first song, she speaks in her own language, a combination of Italian and Korean. In her so-called "Star," she depicts images of numbers, Italian, minus signs, and English titles. Above all, she brings up some familiar subjects, and criticizes them harshly.
In "GX339-4" and "Ca Tient Moi," composed by Lee, we can hear slower tempos in her vocals compared to her other songs. These songs are more along the lines of Techno sounds. Meanwhile, in "I Love X," her ability to rap is apparent. However, even though she tells us that she’s from outer space, she certainly seems to share some ideas with the rest of us. Most of the songs talk about the sadness of separation or heartbreak, and appeal to the feelings of love or loneliness, which may appeal to a general audience all the more, and make them more a part of Techno music.
Nevertheless, it seems that Techno is related more to DJs than to pop singers. If she was attracted by the Techno music or wanted to become a real singer, maybe she should have reconsidered becoming a so-called messenger of Techno music. Even though she tries to sample some Techno sound, it is still far from the genuine principles of Techno music, where electronic rhythm and sound are repeated and mixed in a regular pattern.
It would be a bit excessive to define Lee as a performer of Techno music. Although we can spot something new and experimental through her album, we may have some doubt about the continuity of her musical career. Will her shocking clothes and marketing strategies remain her strong point in future albums? A true musician should try to express music through music itself, and this has been an ultimate truth for a long time, and will remain one in the future.
